About Project O
Project O is an orphan support organization working for the well being of all orphans. Our self-sufficient children’s homes offer, life skills; health care, economic development and promotion of justice, helping communities help themselves. Established to care for South African orphans, Project O plans to embrace the larger issues of community development and advocacy for the poor in its mission to help children and their families build sustainable futures.Working in The Valley of a Thousand Hills, Project O will have the first 100% self-sufficient children homes in the World. We hope that this will attract supporters and sponsors from all over the globe.
The heart of Project O’s work is in helping children who have become orphans due to the AIDS epidemic here in Africa. Project O focuses on children due to the massive scale of the problem. It is predicted that there will be 3,000,000 million orphans by 2007.Project O is an international partnership of Christians whose mission is to follow our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in working with orphans of Africa to promote human transformation, seek justice and bear witness to the good news of the Kingdom of God.
James 1:27
Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this:
to visit orphans and widows in their afflictions,
Literally a lifeline : Let’s get this in perspective.
- 9 million people living with HIV/AIDS. According to latest CIA research.
- A recent KZN (Kwa Zulu Natal) newspaper states a 69% infection rate in Embo; the valley of a thousand hills, which happens to be the place where we started this work.
- 95% of people do not have access to life pro-longing AVR (Anti-retroviral) drugs.
- 95% of the people in South Africa infected with AIDS will be dead in 2-5 years.
- 6 million of those infected are women each leaving behind 3 children on average.
South Africa is a country that is heading for serious trouble. What is the hope for the tidal wave of orphans that are going to be left behind in South Africa over the coming years?
The first part of our answer:
We believe 100% self-sufficient homes for a number of children that is not different from the norm in `South Africa, around six children in each house. Since such a massive number of homes will be needed to house these children it will be impossible to keep raising the money to sustain these homes on a long-term basis. Therefore the only possible solution is to come up with is 100% self-sufficient homes. Not an easy task as our research suggests no organisation has yet managed 100% self-sufficiency for children’s homes.
We have pioneered several projects that will in theory sustain a minimum of one children’s home each. Each of these projects include the provision wind turbines and solar panels for each home providing free electricity.
Planned Self Sufficiency Projects:
- Guest homes
- Fish farm
- Boat/jet ski hire
- Animal husbandry
- Water-slide feature
The second part of our answer:
Support of orphans in extended families; there are many children orphaned by AIDS that have been absorbed or taken in by their extended families. This more often than not puts extreme stress and pressure on the family in many ways including financially. We have come across families who have taken in up to 6 extra orphans (on top of their 6 children) which leaves food at an absolute minimum often children are going hungry.
With this in mind we set up our sponsorship program that provides the following in the extended family home in which they live:
- Full monthly food
- School fees
- School uniform
- Home visits and teaching by our staff (on quad bikes)
John Maxwell said:
In every age there comes a time when a leader must come forward
to meet the needs of the hour.
This is an amazing statement! The needs of this hour are screaming for our attention. The needs of this nation are desperate. Somebody needs to come forward! That somebody may be you and me!
